At La Garenne, we welcome children who are able to access the curriculum but may need extra help due a specific learning need or a lack of confidence in a particular area.
Our teachers understand the need to respond to the unique needs of each of their pupils and appreciate the fact that some children will need additional support during part or all of their schooling.
Our Learning Support specialist teacher works with the class teachers to help identify, assess and monitor children who may require additional support or extension and challenge. Learning support may be provided within the classroom setting, in small groups or on an individual basis dependent on the child’s needs.
An Individual Educational Plan (IEP) is created for each child receiving support from the Learning Support teacher. Parents are informed of these plans and permission is sought to begin learning support.
The opinion of outside specialists is sought when necessary and with the permission of parents. Children may be referred to a team of specialists (educational psychologist, speech therapist, occupational therapist) who work closely with the school. Payment of all costs for specialist testing by outside agencies is the responsibility of the parents. Although the results of specialist testing are the parent’s property, it is in the best interest of the child that all information from outside agencies is shared with the school.
At La Garenne, we are aware of the emotional aspects of overcoming challenges. Our Learning Support specialist works closely with the Head of Pastoral to promote self–esteem and positive attitudes to school and learning.
