La Garenne is constantly developing and we are doing our utmost to continually improve our services for our children and families from around the world. We are therefore always happy and proud to send you our latest news.
Wishing you all a wonderful summer and enjoy reading the articles below.
We are happy to announce we are a candidate school to offer the Middle Years Programme (MYP) next academic year. Our Year 7 to Year 10 students (future MYP1 to MYP 4) will switch from the IMYC to the MYP from September to prepare them for the IB Diploma programme during their Senior Years (IB DP1 and IB DP2).
From September we will name all the classes according to the MYP levels, rather than use the terms Year or Grade. To facilitate understanding, an international grid of equivalences has been created, please click here.
To manage the transition, we will reinforce our teaching team and add four new temporary classrooms in front of Academia building. This will give the students and their teachers more flexibility and offer a larger academic infrastructure while Le Roc Senior School campus is being constructed.
We are very pleased to confirm the educational trips, which will take place during the third term of the academic year. We hope that you are as excited as the children will be about the fantastic opportunity they will have next year. Such experiences will contribute to a truly holistic education going beyond the confines of the traditional classroom. The trips all combine exciting activities and learning experiences for each year group.
Our first Year 10 class (MYP 4) is ready to be launched. Current and new students are excited to be part of this historical step ahead of La Garenne. Their curriculum becoming more challenging, these students will have their school life slightly adapted:
Girls will be accommodated in a new boarding house of “chalet” type
October mid-term break: community services linked to their future IB requirements will take the entire class to Berlin
Thailand Easter Holidays: This will take place during the 1st week of the Easter holidays. More details will follow.
“In having contact with animals, children will learn the joys of life, fun and optimism. Animals invite us to laugh and play, and in doing so this stimulates the secretions of endorphins in the brain which makes us happier and reduces pain and stress”
Dr. McCulloch.
With the school farm we are excited to introduce the children to five hens, some rabbits, a goat and her kids. There will also be a beehive located 400 meters from the school, and next year an insect hotel.
School farms can meaningfully impact a child’s development. A farm has the capacity to reinforce key concepts in their learning journey and can help them grow into more compassionate, caring and reflective human beings, while stimulating their senses.
The benefits of the school farm include:
Developing a child’s capacity to see in themselves a calling to nurture and care for the environment they live in, both locally and globally.
Learning about the processes and systems at play in our natural world helps a child to understand the needs of farmers, how life cycles work and the changes of the seasons.
Gaining firsthand knowledge of important sustainable practices such as composting, water recycling and waste reduction.
Learning becomes an authentic experience as the school farm provides students with the opportunity to connect what they have been learning in the classroom to real-world situations.
The farm is an enriching addition to the campus, for the whole community to enjoy.
Development of the “Le Roc” campus is on schedule, with visible progress each week. Replacement windows have been installed, isolation completed and the new roof is under construction. The children have enjoyed their involvement in this huge project, from concept to construction, including site visits and exchanging ideas.
