Year 8 have been studying rivers

Year 8 have been studying rivers and in yesterday's lesson we decided to go and get some first-hand knowledge of our local stream - La Petite Gryonne. Its flow varies greatly with the seasons and its steep valley is where all the snow is dumped when the streets of Villars are cleared after heavy snowfalls. The students understood a great deal more by looking at the river features 'in the field' as well as in the classroom. They also saw first-hand how humans can have an impact on natural features. For the return to La Garenne, they were given the choice  - a short, steep slope or a longer, more gentle one. They unanimously chose the steep slope.

It was great to see the whole class rising to the challenge!

Spanish Week at La Garenne

For Spanish Week at La Garenne, the primary section were introduced to this with an informative assembly by our Year 5 pupils. The Year 5 class taught us so much about Spanish culture, not only in Spain but in other Spanish speaking countries around the world. There are 20 countries that have Spanish as their official language and more than 400 million people speak Spanish around the world.

Each child presented information, that they had individually researched, about a famous Spanish person or festival. We heard about Rafael Nadal, the No.1 tennis champion, Salvador Dali and Picasso, the famous artists, as well as about some Spanish footballers and ‘La Tomatina’ festival, where people throw tomatoes at each other!

The girls treated us to a Flamenco dance as they had been practising some of the moves and the boys each introduced themselves and their ages in Spanish.

The assembly finished with everyone in the primary section having a go at learning some Spanish words, led by Rodrigo, our Year 5 Spanish speaker!

We are Responsible Global Citizens!

The Primary section spent time in assembly this morning thinking and talking about what it means to be a global citizen. They shared their fantastic ideas and worked collaboratively in groups to look at and discuss the Global Goals. The children had some great suggestions as to how we as a school can make the world a better place, and how as individuals, we can be responsible global citizens.
