MYP4 students visited Berlin

Over the half term break, our MYP4 students visited Berlin for a week packed full of history and culture. The students travelled by train to encourage them to reflect upon the environmental impact of flying. This also gave everyone plenty of time to rest up and prepare for the busy week ahead!

Once in Berlin, the students experienced a variety of cultural tours and museum visits. They particularly enjoyed visiting the DDR Museum and learning about life in East Berlin during the time of the Cold War. The students also took part in some community challenges in order to help them prepare for the Service as Action element of their MYP studies. These ranged from interviewing members of the public to getting their hands dirty making compost in an eco-garden!
A real highlight of the week for all was visiting some of Berlin's best street art with a local artist who then shared some of his top tips in a graffiti workshop. Each of our students created an art piece to take away with them. In addition, they really enjoyed visiting Unsich Bar, a somewhat unusual restaurant where they were served a delicious three-course surprise menu in complete darkness!

Natural History Museum in Geneva

Year 6 had a fantastic time at the Natural History Museum in Geneva. They had a wonderful guided tour by Chloe, a geneticist with so much expertise. The learned about how animals have adapted and evolved over time and asked some incredible questions. Did you know that if a polar bear and grizzly bear reproduce their offspring is called a pizzly bear? Neither did we!

Negotiation and diplomacy

In MYP 4 lessons, students have been examining the Treaty of Versailles and its impact on Germany following the First World War. We finished our investigation by recreating the conference, by representing each country and negotiating our very own ‘La Garenne’ Treaty of Versailles. This allowed the students to see the difficulties the leaders faced in reaching effective solutions (they also had a bit of fun along the way!)

The structure of the Earth

This week in Individuals and Societies lessons, MYP 3 students have started a Unit which explores natural hazards and how people respond to them. In preparation for studying earthquakes and volcanoes, we started by examining Plate Tectonics Theory and the structure of the earth. The whole class modelled the earth from its core in the center, to the outer core, deep and upper mantle and the crust.

Silent debate!

In Wellness lessons MYP students have been exploring the issue of body image. They conducted a written ‘silent debate’ where they discussed to what extent this is an issue that affects both girls and boys.
