Minis’ Assembly on Friday

During the Minis’ assembly on Friday morning, Gemma, our Year 6 teacher, treated us to an introduction to the wonders of Roald Dahl! We read about and guessed characters from their descriptions, Gemma read us a passage from ‘James and the Giant Peach’ and we also watched a short extract from the film.
Last Friday was ‘Roald Dahl’ Day so this was a superb opportunity for us to find out more about him and his many, many popular and page-turning children’s novels. Nearly every one of the Minis had read one or more of his books, which was great to see and I am sure, after Gemma’s wonderful assembly, that they will be inspired to pick up another! Gemma has also hidden some ‘golden tickets’ inside books in the library to encourage the children to pick up and choose books that perhaps they wouldn’t normally have chosen. I, personally, can’t wait to find one!!

The assembly finished with our weekly ‘gratitudes’. Every Friday, the students are given the opportunity to say something positive about another student, relating to one or more of the IPC goals. We also had our ‘Stars of the Week’, this week given for ‘Enquiry’ in the classroom. Well done to all who received a certificate this week and to everyone else for showing excellent enquiry.

MYP Lessons have started!

The teaching of our new IB Middle Years Programme curriculum has started! This week in Humanities lessons MYP 1 students have started a unit exploring what it means to be a global citizen and have started by investigating the issue of plastics in the oceans. In Science, MYP 2 have been asking the question; what do scientists do? They have begun by exploring the scientific method. In Music lessons MYP 3 students have started to create their own radio show  - which will even include ‘jingles’ and advertisements. Finally, MYP 4 Art students have been using the IB Learner Profile to inspire their work!

What an action packed start to the new academic year! Watch this space for more updates on our fantastic new MYP curriculum.

Please talk to your children about these themes and topics over the term and encourage them to share their learning with you.

Art outing and lunch in Montreux

On Friday the 13th of September the MYP 1 and 2 students enjoyed a lovely and enriching Art outing and lunch in Montreux.  They looked at several sculptures placed along the lake by various artists.  The sculptures were part of a juried biennale exposition http://www.biennale.ch/en

Students were asked to sketch one of the sculptures that was meaningful to them in some way.   They will use their sketches for further research that will help them begin their art projects.  Their first MYP unit in Art is on identity and the roles they play in various communities.  The final project will be pretend sculpture proposals that they have created to submit for the next art exposition in 2021 in Montreux.
